Finished with the Consolidation, Now Comes the Material Restoration The Work will Begin October 21. 450,000 Euro Already Appropriated PISA. Tower, second act. After the consolidation, as promised, the further restoration arrives. Now stable, but also more beautiful than ever. For the first part of the work, 450,000 Euro have been appropriated already. The intervention is indispensable to take care of the wounds inflicted by time, as so many interventions have already been seen in the centuries . The restoration begins October 21, after the assemblage of the scaffoldings, and will require 300 days. The work will therefore be completed in June 2003 . The restoration will focus primarily on the external areas that have suffered the most from deteriorattion due to the infiltration of the water. In fact the continuous passage of the water to the inside of the Tower's masonry, more than damaging to the mortar, cause formation of deposits of limestone on the surface, with resulting black crusts and biological attacks. The diverse techniques of cleaning have been chosen in ways to allow a gradual and selective removal of the altered materials, respecting the signs left by time on the ancient stones of the Tower. The restoration of the upper bell cell will be approached in two following phases, taking turns on each half of the extension of the surfaces, in an effort to all the Tower tro remain open to tourists. The delicate jobs of restoration of the materials has been contracted through proper competition, to the firm Alessandra Pelliccioni, that has already performed numerous and imporatnt architectural restorations of materials, plasters, mural paintings, among which the façade of the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Rome, stuccoes of the crypt of the Saints Luke and Martin, paintings in the excavations of Pompei and Ercolano. The scaffoldings will be installed by Eredi Tabuani, who has performed interventions for numerous monuments, among which our very own Tower of Pisa and the Basilica of St. Francesco in Assisi on occasion of the recent disastrous earthquake. An important element in this phase of restoration is the collection of data relative to the future operations, that will transfer to the system "Leaning Tower GIS", implemented by the Normal Superior School, to pick up and manage the acquired information on the Tower. An expected intervention and that will finally permit the writing of the last word on an adventure that has lasted more than 10 years. |
