by Francesco Loi PISA. In October of next year, in conjunction with the "Month of Italian Culture" celebrated in the United States, New York will entertain a special dedicated show to the Tower of Pisa and particularly to the work of restoration that has made the Tower safe and will allow the reopening to the public. On the initiative of the Italian Institute of Culture, in the last few days in New York the first operational meeting for the preparation of the initiative has been completed. Those participating in the meeting included the provincial alderman for Culture, Aurelio Pellegrini, the president of the committee for the Tower Michele Jamiolkowski, the architect Alessandro Sonnetti, who will be one of the administrators of the show, and some representatives of the Italian embassy along with the Italian press l'Onu. In the course of the meeting, after fixing the period for carrying out of the demonstration (at the Museum of Science and Technology of New York), the definite composition of the organizational committee of the whole initiative has been made. Professor Jamiolkowski will preside over the organization and among the others, the manager of the Normal school Salvatore Settis. The show will be divided into two sections: one artistic and the other scientific. Sketches, photos, models and other material will be used to illustrate to the world the whole of the interventions completed for the stability of the leaning Tower. A similar initiative had been organized in last months at New York, along with the United Nations, to understand the importance of the discovery of the Roman ships in the excavations at St. Rossore. The Pisan presence in New York, fixed before the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, is also an occasion to remember the tragedy of 11 September. " It seems to me opportune", alderman Pelligrini explains, "to represent the solidarity of Pisa and of our province to the city of New York, to the victims of the slaughter, to the families". Together with the ceremonial head Mayor Giuliani, Doctor Li Castro, and the manager of the Italian Institute of Culture Paolo Riani, alderman Pellegrini in the course of a brief ceremony has offered a plate and a bunch of flowers at the feet of the statue of the fireman on 48th Street, in front of the offices of the Manhattan fire bureau, "a body", alderman Pellegrini says, " that is a symbol of the courage at the moment of help, and at a price unfortunately of the sacrifice of several human lives, and now carrying on the fatiguing reconstruction of the city". On the plate of the Province and of the Commune of Pisa these words are affected: "In memory of the victims of the terrorist incident of 11 September 2001. As life continues we share the pain of the City and the American people". Translated by Gary Feuerstein, 13 October 2001, from the Il Tirreno article Building Homepage
