May 1st was busier by 25% than last year.

But, even more gratifying, now there is more attention to the museums.

Pacini: "We will improve our accommodation", while Vanni adds: "We will continue to do our part".

PISA. The first account of the tourist flow in Piazza dei Miracoli for the first four months of 2001, and, in particular, the tourists that have visited monuments and museums, more than flattering, has been made known by the Work of the Primaziale . Already in January and February the increase has been, relative to the same period of last year, respectively 6.77 and 20.57 %. The month of March must be recorded as a net decline: 131,782 visitors last year compared to 108,827 this year - a reduction of about 16 per cent. The month of April, recently departed, returns calm in the piazza of the Cathedral: the increase amounts to about 5 per cent.

The optimistic course is also seen in the "bridge" on the first of May where visitors to monuments and museums amount to, with respect to 2000, an increase of about 25 per cent. Besides, it must be considered that the Jubilee Year of 2000 had positively influenced the presence of pilgrims.

In comments on this first account, the president of the Work of the Pisan Primaziale, Pierfrancesco Pacini, has said, "The flow of tourists recorded in these first months of the new millennium comforts us for the efforts made and for those that have been programmed by the Officials. One of our objectives has been that of a better reception for visitors to deepen their acquaintance with the works of art in the Cathedral, the Monumental Cemetery, the baptistery, and the two museums".

On the tourist flow, Stephen Vanni intervenes, president of Appri (Association of Pisan Provincial Restorations). Vanni appraises positively the effects on tourism that wil come from the accord signed by the Commune of Pisa and the President of the Counsel for the relocation of the barracks in the Hospital Zone and the consequent realization of the Museum of Navigation. A change that "is accompanied by concrete actions on the part of the Pisan entrepreneurs and not, in the sense of a better and qualified receptiveness, in the change of mentality on the part of all the elements of commerce, but in the sense of better quality in the offerings. As with the restorations, we will undertake, without reseravtion, to do our part".
