PISA. Boys and Girls, get to work: you could be the authors of the poster that will advertise the new Tower, that will be reopened to the public after 11 years of work. It is actually a contest for students of Pisan elementary and middle schools, evenly administered. The contest comes from the general direction of the state building by the Special Services of the Office of Public Works.
The prizes will be awarded for four of the best among those presented, only if developed by one of the eligible individuals. The works must have the theme "the Tower of Pisa" and they must be sketches, graphics or slogans. The students may reflect on these matters: "In 1990, when the Tower continued to tilt dangerously and it therefore could collapse, the Tower was closed to the public; currently the results achieved have brought the Tower again to the inclination that it had in 1800, rejuvenating it by about two hundred years. The collaboration between various branches of the science (engineering, art history, art of restoration, urbanism) and the appointment of world renowned experts, have made it so that the Tower has returned safe and it can, after more than ten years, be reopened to the public". For more information on the Tower of Pisa, one may visit the Internet sites http://torre.duomo.pisa.it/ or The Unoffiicial English Language Leaning Tower of Pisa Site: http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/ltpisa/ltpisa.html. The art works come classified in two sections, respectively, for the works of the pupils of the Pisan elementary schools and for the pupils of the lower middle schools. The interested schools must send their application to the secretary of the contest, in care of the Director of Education of Pisa: in care of professor Rossella Pedri. In the questionaire the institutes must indicate their own summary specifying address, telephone number, fax number, and/or e-mail address and the name of the sender. Each work will arrive at the secretary's office by May 10 accompanied by an indication of the section of the contest to which it is participating (elementary or middle school) and, for the sketches and graphics generally, a title of the work, brief descriptive summary and resume of the uthor. The jury is composed of four employees of the schools and presided over by a representative of the Office of Public Workss. They will award four prizes - each a portable personal computer, according to these criterions of evaluation: first and second prize for the best work among those presented by pupils of the elementary, and first and second prize among those from students of the middle schools, all valued on the basis of creativity, originality and imagination. The winners will be selected by the end of May and proclaimed June 16 at 4:30 PM at the Work of the Primaziale. The economic support for the initiative has been guaranteed by the Tower of Pisa Consortium Project. The winning entries will remain the property of the Office of Public Works which will promote them and publish them for specific goals of the agency. For simlar purposes, the winning entries themselves will be on view in the Office of Public Works. Translated by Gary Feuerstein, 21 April 2001, from the Il Tirreno article
