Bordeaux France Statue of Liberty
2.5-meter (8-foot) statue located in this Southwest France city. The original of the Bordeaux statue was taken down and melted by the occupying Germans in World War II. The replacement was put up in 2000 with a plaque added later to commemorate the victims of the September 11 attacks in the US. The statue and the Sept. 11 plaque are beside each other in a square near the city center. On the night of March 25, 2003, unknown vandals poured petrol and paint over the replica and set it on fire. The vandals also cracked the pedestal of a plaque honoring victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Former prime minister Alain Juppe, who is mayor of Bordeaux, condemned the attack. |
