March 6, 1998 Statue of Liberty model goes to Japan for festival of French culture ![]() TOKYO (Reuters) -- The scale model used by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi as a blueprint for the Statue of Liberty has been shipped to Tokyo to take part in Japan's yearlong festival of French culture. The 14-ton statue was divided into six pieces for its month-long journey from Paris, where it is normally on display near a bridge on the Seine River. It will be reassembled at Daiba Beach Park in Tokyo in April. The model's full-sized version, of course, was a gift from the French people in 1884, and stands at the entrance to New York Harbor.
