Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island See Huge Drop in Tourists Post-9/11

NEW YORK Dec. 29, 2002
AP and ABC News report that since the Sept. 11 attacks, tourism has declined sharply at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. About 2.5 million visitors visited Liberty Island in 2002, down from 4 million in the year prior to Sept. 11, 2001. The Island and Statue remain under tight security. The Statue remains closed to the public. Liberty Island is open following a 100-day shutdown after Sept. 11. The number of domestic visitors to New York City has remained about the same, 30 million a year.
