Saturday June 30, 2001 The New York Post reports that the City has set aside $150 million to retrofit the City's bridges against earthquakes, an event expected to happen every 500 years or so. Henry Perahia, the city's chief bridge officer, is quoted as saying that 50 to 60 percent of the city's 759 bridges and overpasses will be retrofit and that the priority is on spans, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, that would serve as evacuation routes when the big one strikes. The last 5.0 quake in NYC was in 1884, but the hazard is real and the impact would be enormous. |
