Dimensions of the Great Bridge (From the reverse side of the card) The attempt to bridge the East River of a breadth of 1,600 feet, navigable water with a single span is something new in the progress of engineering. Twice the size of the Niagara Suspension Bridge and four times the longest non-extension spans ever attempted. The total length of this colossal structure is 6,927 feet - about a mile and one-seventh. Anchorages 117 feet. From face of the anchorages to towers 930 feet. Length between towers 1,596 feet. The road bed is 80 feet wide, and at an elevation of 186 feet above high water. The base of each tower measures 56 by 134 feet and the height of each is 268 feet above high water. Total cost is estimated at about Seven Millions. |
